Cupcake Cool

Everywhere I go I am surrounded by these pastel-coloured, sugary things. And I don't mean high society aunties.I'm talking about cupcakes...sweet nothings...that are taking over the world.
Yes, cupcakes have a new life post primary school lunchbox treats and bake sales. It seems that everyone now is jumping on the sweet-tooth train and baking, biting and boasting cupcakes....whether its a friend from college running a cupcake business, a cousin giving them out as favours on her bridal shower or a fashion designer buddy sending them to announce the arrival of her baby....cupcakes are everywhere.
Vogue magazine has pronounced that: 'Owning a cupcake bakery is the career fantasy of our times.'... and i personally know no less that five cupcake business owners residing in my beautiful city by the sea, Karachi.
The sweet confections have 'overtaken chocolates and flowers as a gifting idea,' and are being toutes as the 'new candle'.The most exclusive can cost an arm and a leg just for a couple of sticky mouthfuls.
And i don't doubt that this cupcake boom took off with the help of the fictional protagonists of Sex In The City, who dropped in for dainty treats at the (real) Magnolia Bakery in New York. And because that makes them 'fashion', i can't complain...my waist, however, has a mind of its own!

House of Harlow Launching Sunglasses

Who better to launch her own line of sunglasses than someone rarely seen without them? Nicole Richie has, at long last, incorporated sunglasses into her hugely successful accessories line, House of Harlow 1960, launched in 2008.
Accesory afficianados like me have been oohing and aahing at her retro inspired shoes and hippy deluxe jewellery and now her sunnies, on sale from June, will complete the bohemian LA-luxe line.An initial collection of 40 classic shaped shades is scheduled to be retailed at very.co.uk and at East London boutique, 11 Boundary.Wish we could get them here!
I reckon the collection will be sold out in minutes, keeping with the popularity of the brand itself, coupled with the fact that summers are all about accessorising, big bold and in style. Embellished sandals, chunky statement necklaces and of course the obligatory summer essential, sunglasses!

The Ouch of Eyebrow Waxing

They say your eyes are the windows to your soul. I guess that makes our eyebrows the curtains! And just as the perfect window treatments complement your windows, the shape of your brows can add dramatic beauty to your face. But be warned....going from drab to fab takes expertise. Unless you want to run the risk of  the 'surprised by everything' look, trust only experts to shape your  eyebrows.

Tweezing, threading, waxing, shaving and laser-ing are some of the most popular choices in this regard, and for me, the treatment of choice is waxing...and i'v just come out of one such session! Now, i've been getting my eyebrows waxed for ages, yet still come across girls unfimiliar with the 'treatment'!

Sadly, there are very few salons in Karachi who wax eyebrows...i trust Queen's to do mine and they do a damn good job of it! If you haven't tried it yet, you should, it's painless compared to threading, causes less irritation and stays smooth much much longer than other techniques too.

Trend Alert: Tangerine

My cousin Maheen's getting married in July and the dresscode for girls at her mehendi night is orange, while the boys will be adorning off-white kurtas. And  i'm super excited about my gold on tangerine flowy kamiez, for tangerine is THE colour of the season! From fashion runways to the pages of glossies, casuals to formals, shades of orange are everywhere, the most popular being tangerine. Face it: nothing says ‘hello sunshine’ like tangerine! And you can wear it bright on bright, paired with a rainbow of colours, or bright on light, paired with white, beige, tan, etc. And of course, wearing tangerine doesnt mean you wear it as fabric....jewellery, handbags, shoes et all....that's the way to be right now!

My own wardrobe for the summer has no less than 5 pieces in orange! There's a printed A-line shirt that i picked up at the ever-eliable Aashiana which pairs bright orange, turquoise, magenta and purple, a pintucked burnt orange kurta, a persimmon t-shirt, a Wadha Saleem print jora that combines orange with brown, blue and yellow and then of course, the gotta and sequin-worked Tangerine Dream i shall adorn at the mehendi of the year!!!!i'm predicting exotic oranges paired with deliciously brigh colours that night, but going for one colour outfit myself!

Am also super-excited about what i'm wearing as its being constructed from a 32 year old sari that was part of my mother's trousseau!Vintage-chic, eh? In the absence of decent orange accessories in the local markets, i'm looking to pair up the outfit with kunda earrings, a gold clutch and tangerine khussas for the oh-so-ethnic look!Pics will be posted post event, which is in July fyi!

Churidars Galore!

7 out of twelve girls at work today are in churidars! Whoa! They really ARE in!Tightly fitting trousers worn traditionally by both men and women in South and Central Asia, churidars have made a huge comeback! What with the super-long shirtlength trend that refuses to go away despite semi-annual Fashion Week predictions, one would think the 'lower' element in the ensemble would hardly hold much significance. But nooo! Over the last few years, we have gone from coupling kameezes with shalwars of various designs and cuts, to capri pants, to loose ijaars and gharara pants, and what not! And 2011 apparently is the year of the churidar.
They're super-trendy, they suit every body type and comfortable!Yessss u read that right...they really are! One would think such tight fitting pants could never be, but they are! Churidars are cut wide at the top and narrow at the ankle, which makes them easy to slip on and off. They are usually cut on the bias (at a 45 degree angle to the grain of the fabric) which makes them naturally stretchy, which is important when pants are closefitting. They are also longer than the leg and sometimes finish with a tightly fitting buttoned cuff at the ankle. The excess length falls into folds and appears like a set of bangles resting on the ankle (hence 'churidar'; 'churi': bangle, 'dar': like). When the wearer is sitting, the extra material is the "ease" that makes it possible to bend the legs and sit comfortably. And oh-how-beautifully they reveal the contours of the leg!
Gone are the days when churidars were part of formal attire....meant to be worn at weddings, and then folded and stored in muslin cloth until the next big occassion. We now have churidars made of lawn and cotton fabric, which is also at times lycra-mixed! Designers like Adnan Pardesy have come up with denim churidars also, which are a fabulous amalgamation of east and west! And at Gulabo by Maheen Khan, Huma Adnan's FNK Asia and Generation among others, you have lace-trimmed, embroidered, mixed fabric and printed  varieties of churidars; ready-to-wear at pocket-friendly pricetags!
Those who haven't tried churidars must do so, for there is no excuse not to!Go ahead...shake a leg!
